Our financial advisor recently sent us details on starting a 529 college savings account for our son Using standard projections from today’s costs, the proposal calculated that his 4-year college degree will cost $738,000 All we have to do is save $1,600/mo for 18 years WTFpic.twitter.com/KBOccW5wPZ

yeah, I already decided saving for my childrens' college is pointless even if the current system and extrapolation holds, and I could cover that, I wouldn't pay for my kids to go to school surrounded with others whose parents don't understand opportunity cost

That’s enough for your kids to retire on 20 years into working without them saving a penny.

Honestly, it’s just a dumb exponential curve fitting for something that can’t grow at this rate for 18 years. And they’re using Stanford university, which isn’t cheap.

The college wage premium is still quite significant and folks going to Stanford are going to be really well positioned to take advantage of further economic growth. It's not crazy to expect costs to continue to rise that much for another few decades. Paid via tuition or taxes.
