A lot of it is cost push given that lower wage industries are competing with enhanced unemployment benefits for labor.
Not sure that thesis entirely works out if you look into the sectorial labor force data tbh. And to an extent I believe the extraordinary size of the hospitality sector during the last decade is partly behind the stubbornly low productivity growth
Shifting employment into higher productivity sectors over time strikes me as not a bad thing even if it involves significant frictions at the moment
Not sure which labor force data you have in mind, but leisure and hospitality average hourly earnings in FRED have certainly grown at a pretty spicy rate since March.
The exit/ entry form the labor force so u6 + the sectorial data. No doubt hospitality has been hit hard, but it’s at the bottom of the employment stack so
I guess one of the reason why I believe the inflationary pressure will be transistors is because of my expectation that
Employees are gonna switch to more productive sectors in the mid to long term
I think Eigen‘s take is insofar underrated in that all bets are off if more exogenous shocks keep coming in - from the pipeline hack to unforeseen reopening problems due to corona etc.
