They are. In a Tesla model S it's arund 1000 lbs. And you can't put them in the trunk or where the engine is in other cars bc of the center of gravity.

So they need to be more or less in the floor of the car, which makes it impractical to make them swappable.

I think Tesla offers this service at some locations. At the very least I remember reading that they were planning to, which given that it's Tesla could mean they changed their mind three times by now but

They are, but it's totally possible to swap them from a technology perspective Tesla used to offer this briefly, so all Model S and X are capable of it They quickly stopped doing it, because demand relative to normal charging was super low, so their new cars can't do it anymore

Big problems on the demand side are cost (battery swap stations are much more expensive than chargers, and you need more than one pack per vehicle to have any advantage in surge capacity), and also *that your battery gets swapped out*. The super expensive item that wears,
