an Iron Law of social institutions appears to be that entrenched careerism overpowers advances in the nominal function of the institution by so many orders of magnitude that only generational turnover moves the needle reliably.

one interpretation of "cancel culture" is that this dynamic is (at least implicitly) well understood and forcing retirements by ostracism is a much more expedient path of advancement than is typically available. for better or for worse.
