it hadnt occurred to me that its taboo to discuss this as its own thing, rather than as an ancillary support for a position on another issue, but I think it probably ishttps://twitter.com/peterrhague/status/1390898298588962817?s=19 …

”the trend of having a single child took hold among protestants of the historical regions of Novohrad, Hont, Malohont and Gemer … catholics faced pretty much the same economic pressures and yet they've survived unscathed” ie Catholics are less vulnerable to this sickness

mine primarily but I’m sure I ‘borrowed‘ it from someone else at some point, comes from the idea that a lot of our atheist moral values are not just Christian-themed but specifically Protestant, and this work ethic > children phenomenon is a vulnerability inherited from this

oh yeah that checks out I think you can have a little confirmation as a treat if you just stumble upon it :) also id be curious how this breaks down in Europe across religious lines maybe. not sure modern Catholics are so protected

will be key to see which culture ends up ‘winning’ amongst the second generations of migrant populations who flow into the West to fill the population gap left by this phenomenon, I agree the picture is mixed so far

Yeah Catholic teaching and theology is extremely explicit that you are not exactly supposed to enjoy your vocations. A vocation is more like ‘a path of suffering to which God has called you’. It’s expressly the case that work is unrelenting toil but also good for you.

indeed, though accounted for in my mental model by decreased actual Catholicism, as denoted by actual religious practice, and America is the best place to tease this differentiation out https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0049089X18302722 …pic.twitter.com/gxr3mrgnz8
