Since we’ve been talking about baby monitors let me tell you about our first baby monitor. I’m going to preface this with the fact that we keep my grandmothers ashes in the house...

We were given a Summer Infant baby monitor. I think for the baby shower. From my mother. Nice, worked well, pricey bit of kit. It worked flawlessly for about a month. And then randomly the “play music” function would trigger. Except it wasn’t really random.

It would routinely happen when Octavia woke up. Or when she was alone for some reason. Times when a baby would like music. I thought it was maybe an automated feature and I read the entire manual. Not automated.

I thought it was some sort of malfunction. And I suppose it still could be. But I tore that thing apart, and nothing. At the same time stuff started going missing from the kitchen. A dough hook. A couple of small knives. A serving spoon.

Things I’d associate with my grandmother. Moms mom, Ukrainian. Loved to cook. It’s more than a year later and the five adults in this house still haven’t found those items. But things stopped going missing.

I am not a “spirit” person. At all. But it was all so strange that, to me, I have a hard time justifying it except that my grandmother was around to see the baby.
