Interestingly this effects historical understanding, I am currently reading about warfare mostly between the Pima and Apache beyond the frontier from the prehistoric period into the 19th century. The Apache mostly live by raiding, the Pima largely by irrigation farming in valleys

Truces basically never hold, and the Pima over time abandon many fertile village sites and their irrigation works due to Apache attacks, they have almost no trade or peaceful interactions. but the a big majority of recent historians describe Pima attacks on Apache as “irrational”

I think you have that exactly backwards, and that we perceive that as "normal" because we are on the tail end of a very odd historical period of high prosperity and global peace. As we leave a positive-sum world we lose the memes and methods that work in that environment.
