Once they start interacting with the pages you are going to want the ones with cardboard pages. This protects both the books and your kid's fingers. Expensive illustrated editions seem like they become relevant a bit later.

You can get some of these at the library! I picked up the annotated Alice by Gardner and it has basically every illustration ever printed in any edition.
