Its not an either/or ... although I agree that it went way way too far. Regional banks and local banks coexisted national banking was illegal but very large corps could raise money on national security markets based in NYC... but local deposits advantaged local builders

Isn't this literally Kegans thesis? Aka the modern world is built on systems that need the kind of individual that cooperates within the system even if the hierarchical relationships seem unfair to them?

That is operating on face to face reciprocity is k3 and we need k4 to run things smoothly. However that contract has broken down since 1990 and too many systems are failing to do their tasks, leaving even the k4 at a loss for how to operate.

whenever the US compares poorly to other countries on some metric there is a panic and a centralized federal response to "fix" the problem which makes it worse. For some reason, other countries are cribbing this playbook even though is doesn't work for most government functions
