For perspective, it's illegal to separate cats and dogs from their mothers earlier than 8 weeks, but ok for humans, who have larger brains and need significantly more attachment time than animals which develop quicker?

this specifically is the political issue about which my views have shifted most since having a kid it somehow never occurred to me that most(?) parents were putting their kids in day care while they were still infants who thought this was a good idea????

on the other hand it literally took rousseau to revive breastfeeding among haute parisians so maybe things have been strange for quite a while

I'm not sold on the objecting in the original tweet/thread. 1. Grandparents have always been a thing 2. We have a nanny who started 2 weeks after Leah and that certainly seemed fine

Neither of those are "daycare", but the original framing was about some need for constant mothering by the parents specifically, not a worry that day care is low quality relative to more intensive(?) child care options.

massive redpill on childhood development. Things are bad out there. Small wonder we have a generation of sociopaths

There has never been a period in the West where "full/most time mother" has been a thing. Running a home and - often - contributing economically made it impossible. Unless you think 90% of mothers in the 16th-18th century were negligent?

As Antonia Frasier has pointed out, for women at the time, actively enjoying spending time with any children was considered deeply noteworthy.

I wonder what differences will be noticeable between my niece (born post-daycare closures, 13 months) and my nephew (daycare infant, almost 4)

my parents left me with my grandparents when they both were working. Much better than daycare imo but still strange to think about everything around how ppl typically raise children these days seems very weird to me
