Well, all meat consumption necessarily involves an amount of suffering - the question is whether the alternative necessarily causes LESS suffering due to unchecked externalities. My problem with veganism is that it forces the conversation into a strong black-white dichotomy:

Either you care about animal suffering or you're a monster. But there is another angle to look at this where food consumption is plainly an extractive enterprise and many products that resolve shortcomings in the vegan diet have their own problems (like over-reliance on soy)
