if you want a thing for a dozen distinct purposes you are optimizing on 14 or more different margins and you typically end up with something that manages three things tolerably and nine things barely, if at all

such tradeoffs can be seen in (eg) prime lenses vs zoom lenses, and again in cameras that can use different lenses vs those that cannot, and then in cameras vs things that have cameras attached as an extra (eg phones and laptops)

this sort of purchasing does come with a cost of course. you end up with lots of purpose-built stuff that you have to store if you're hiking a swiss army knife often makes more sense than a knife and a saw and a file and a bottle opener and a etc etc
