such tradeoffs can be seen in (eg) prime lenses vs zoom lenses, and again in cameras that can use different lenses vs those that cannot, and then in cameras vs things that have cameras attached as an extra (eg phones and laptops)

this sort of purchasing does come with a cost of course. you end up with lots of purpose-built stuff that you have to store if you're hiking a swiss army knife often makes more sense than a knife and a saw and a file and a bottle opener and a etc etc

True, but often the cost-effective way of achieving the primary purpose is a microcontroller with a bunch of sensors. Adding more functionality becomes easy. That said, weight sensors are probably crap.
