yes it does. golden dawn was terrifying when it was big, and it's over in its political form, but the underlying societal/political structure has not changed. oh by the way, did you know that some greeks participated in the srebrenica massacrehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WmWqWRjKuXQ …

as the bosnian serb leader said at the time, "we have with us only God and the Greeks", i.e. greece, despite being a NATO member had wide popular support for serbia in the bosnian war. in fact, the greek flag was raised in belgrade's government buildings.

Greek TV personas were taking light-hearted interviews of serb military generals, (later convicted) war criminals, asking questions such as "what's your zodiac sign" complete madness nobody talks about this here.

how did greece end up like this and where is it on the line between based and legitimately insane

mix the following: * abstract sense of superiority due to ancient ancestry * orthodox christianity being the main community pillar under the 400 yr ottoman occupation * wide anti-american sentiment bc of stuff (support for the junta on the left, cyprus issue on the right)

the above, enmeshed with a fully corrupted political system, cultural remnants from the ottoman era, as well as harsh persecution of the left in the middle of the century, create a very high variance political landscape, very fruitful for extreme opinions to take hold

yeah ngl this sounds like a nightmare. but probably instructive in some way.
really appreciate this suggestion--think I'm gonna finish off medieval china and pivot to 20-21C Greece
