most Americans I know have interesting answers to the question, and weird different forks owing to population migration. For example plenty of people are fresh off the boat (mom's side) and long time Americans (dad's side) at the same time

met some irish med students working in boston one summer in the 80s (there was no work to be had in galway or london) who found it very amusing to meet locals who would describe themselves as irish. "naw, man - you're an *american*. i'm irish."

Oof, eigen: if “Americans” like to swap these stories but these Asian-Americans *don’t*, are you othering them by implying they are less american just b/c they feel our long-standing cultural handling of things like this is obviously Racist and should be eradicated?
