Aren't our current atheoretical ethics the result of regular bouts of theoretical (religious) ethics? If our ethics are better than before then maybe they can be even better with some further theoretical pushes?

i think current ethics are mostly folk ethics and religious ethics tend to be downhill of those maybe we can improve things with theory but its a hell of a search algorithm when you look at historical attempts
