I'd call it "heuristic" rather than atheoretical, but yes. It's better often because the world is wide & weird and admits so many exceptions that no single firm rule holds up well over time & exposure to bizarre reality
-
The classic moral hard rule is "thou shalt not kill" which rapidly breaks into a lot of special cases under any reasonable inspection (self defense, war, etc) The classic over-reaction to THAT is total moral relativism. This gives you the two poles of "too hot" / "too cold"

Indeed, if there is no contradiction between your beliefs there’s a good chance that your beliefs are either confined to a very small context, or otherwise overly blunt & prescriptivehttps://twitter.com/visakanv/status/1268318677394284544 …

Aren't our current atheoretical ethics the result of regular bouts of theoretical (religious) ethics? If our ethics are better than before then maybe they can be even better with some further theoretical pushes?
-
i think current ethics are mostly folk ethics and religious ethics tend to be downhill of those maybe we can improve things with theory but its a hell of a search algorithm when you look at historical attempts
