i think a thing missed by a lot of these is that even a conventional conflict would have massive consequences no matter who won and the world economic order would get a really rude shakeup fast

The thing about Duterte is that he built his reputation as a tough guy, a strong guy, who wouldn't back down from either the domestic or international troubles the Philippines faced. If he starts to look like Xi's errand boy, it's a very black mark on that reputation.
