just noticed a weird thing there used to be a ton of leftist cause areas. you could be a cool leftist by protesting china occupying tibet or by supporting gay marriage or by sending shoes to honduras or opposing the middle east or destroying the sun (long term cause of coal)

This seems like the opposite mechanism. Many individual right wingers remained diverse in beliefs, but Republican leadership shrank its Overton Window, hence Ross Perot, etc

I think race and identity issues increased in sailence on the left during and as a reaction to the Trump administration? Same way a lot of the mid 2000's left was defined in opposition to Bush's war in Iraq and Patriot act.

I'm too young to remember a pre-Reagan GOP, but it doesn't seem like much changed. If anything, under Reagan GOP added Abortion & Guns as core issues that were previously not 100% politically aligned

People tend to clump around polarizing ideas. I think it's probably in part because we make sense of the world by comparison: "I'm this, I'm not that." It creates two poles and over time all other ideas get "attracted" to those poles.

It's also cognitively, psychologically, and metabolically cheaper to belong to a group with a simpler message.

This flattening/constriction happened under Trump. People who went to protests during the Trump years were all the same crowd, no matter if it was an immigration protest, an anti-gun protest, or a straight Trump protest. They were all just anti-Trump/GOP protests, in the end.
