heh
@robertwrighter interviewing @jessesingal, i have been anticipating this for a week or two
it feels vaguely unvirtuous to watch. for some reason. yet here i gohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPO6w6kkakk …

like ultimately your response to learning that IAT is hot garbage might simply be "well i know less than i thought i did and i should be even less confident about other things that i thought i knew" but instead bob is trying to come up with a sort of comprehensive rectification

example: "this test fails to attain even internal validity" means "you should ignore this test forever. burn it. damnatio memoriae" but maybe you dont know this if you're not passingly familiar with basic psychometricshttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1379657255516180480 …

goes on to also critique the superpredator meme which, fine, but its kind of stale innit feels like political cover which, also fine

also criticizing Grit. casually compares grit unfavorably to IQ shiny and chrome

hahahaha and power posing up for a dunking gotta catch em all

bob touches on the expert problem of journalism where oh no what if experts are producing shit i think this is letting journalists off somewhat too easily. they incentivize this behavior. bad journalists NEED expert's
Show this thread -
like "oh we have an expert. so i can report what she says uncritically" is terrible journalism but i think also the default to say nothing of fishing for experts and just quoting the ones you like extremely lazy but if we take experts at their word of course ppl will do this

i've been thinking about a particular weakness bayesianism seems to have that's very heavily related to this, idk if i'm misunderstanding something but it's related to scott alexander's "the control group is out of control"
-
basically, scott's thesis is: if you get evidence for a hypothesis you find extremely unlikely, that same level of evidence elsewhere should become suspect. but i can see this spiralling out of control very quickly in very general cases
