the interesting about this is that "teacher" is the second choice everywhere which makes me think that people form their desired career choices by simply identifying the highest status seeming adult around them and saying "yeah uh ill do that" https://twitter.com/ProfoundPilled/status/1379180006044180481 …

I really appreciate this, thanks. And yeah that seems like a pretty useful framing. I'll read the rest of the article, but the basic premise makes a lot of sense. My vague sentiment is that I enjoy what I'm doing right now, and I can always bail out to tech if I want money.

But yeah it's a low-odds trajectory. My plan is to limit myself to one postdoc, and then apply for faculty jobs with no intention of anything with "adjunct" in the name. If I get one, great; if not, I enjoyed the path so I can stomach the opportunity cost. Maybe short sighted...

Sorry for stepping in but this is excellent advice from Eigen. I don’t regret anything but I do wish I had considered what I wanted from LIFE while I was in grad school. It’s important.

I endorse stepping in, any more specific thoughts are welcome

I took the offer from the lowest status by far (but best vibe by far) institute I applied to (talking to myself at this point))
