basically nonlocal hormonal birth control probably makes lots of women who use it crazy this aligns with my experience dating women who have moved from localized hormones (esp nuvaring) to other methods (esp pill) and 100% lost their shit

...suppresses testosterone levels. This has all kinds of effects depending on the individual: anxiety, depression, giving up earlier after failure (frustration tolerance), libido.... -imagine slightly tweaking the hormone cocktail for over half of the women in the US alone...

tbf, hormonal bc does a lot of good for some people but psychoactive effects are, imo, understudied and neglected when people compare costs and benefits here

A question that I have wondered is there any medication that uses the same chemicals as bc but not in sufficient amounts to control birth, but enough to help with the other medical issues the pill can alleviate?

there's lots of hormone therapy out there. what dosing is like compared to BC, I'm not sure

It can vary. The shit that trans women use (which is off-label stuff originally designed for other purposes) have pretty varied dosages available. One issue with some BC is use of synthetic progestins, not bio-identical progesterone (more expensive, but way fewer side effects).
