trying to disentangle how much of my profound pessimism about society stems from actual trends and likely outcomes vs how much from just being older and seeing things I grew fond of in my youth disappearing

the two main problems I see are (i) china, an authoritarian hell state, becoming increasingly powerful while its main counterbalance, the united states, is doing its level best to destroy itself; and (ii) I live in the united states while it is trying to destroy itself

I think I have convinced myself that these are real problems and not just superannuated griping about how bands were better in the 90s

living in the US while it destroyed itself would be less of a problem if I did not have a child and plans for more. I am resourceful and resilient but that is a lot of Circumstance to drop on children.

@selentelechia and I discussed redlines for abandoning our city, our state, and our country intra-US moves depend on factors that may change quickly. outside the US, depending on other factors: certain South American stateshttps://twitter.com/Cererean/status/1372871302609002497?s=19 …eigenrobot added,

yeah. had these thoughts. some of our redlines are specifically around childrearing rather than immediate social collapse though eg, if homeschooling were outlawedhttps://twitter.com/eigenrobot/status/1372873766879985668?s=19 …

The government can make a decision, but they also have to enforce it. I think the odds of a federal homeschooling ban being successful nationwide are very very low. You really think sheriffs are going to rock up and drag parents away?

that's more a state level concern. in that case, honestly yeah I think CPS would be extremely willing to drag kids off.

Replying to @eigenrobot @Cererean and
CPS staff tend not to be cultivated organically from within a particular state’s culture but rather colonized from without by earnest unmoored and blue-pilled college grads. So for ex. horror stories of Lakota children being taken by CPS in conservative South Dakota
