I'm enjoying Roger Crowley's "City of Fortune", a wonderfully well written history of the Venetian empire. Beautifully written, full of wonderful quotations from the era, romantic but never unrealistic. The narration on thr audiobook compliments the text quite well.

I didn't know about the fact that the Byzantines had held more than ten thousand venetians hostage before. Explains a lot. Can never forgive the sack of Constionaple but it like everything else was part of the cycle of karma
