When my Dad was in grad school in the forties there were books in the library catalog with a cursive “s” on the card, it stood for scruple. It meant you had to get those books from the librarian even with stacks pass and sometimes they denied the books to women students.

I meant women grad students, undergraduates were banned without a note. This apparently became self evidently ludicrous when they started getting ww2 veteran students and it began to fall apart. This was in New England btw.
