the serious answer is that they say they are printing opinions that a sufficient (arbitrary) portion of the population believe so that their readers can be informed as to the kinds of things that other people believe.

I want to say that op ed pages are a vestigial compromise from the days of yellow journalism. The whole paper used to be like that. Now it's just a couple of pages in the back of Section B.
