had a fun scare half an hour ago where baby sounded like she was having difficulty breathing and we were scrambling at quarter to two in the morning trying to figure out whether it was one of the bad kinds of having difficulty breathing

there is significant overlap between these groups and as a new parent I must say fuck the people in that intersection

The first few months with a first baby are really like this non stop. I remember it well. Not the fun part, but it'll be fine.

A friend told me when we had our first kid; Just do the things you're supposed to, ask for help when you're not sure, don't go crazy worrying, and the kid will be fine. Much stupider people than you manage this successfully.

The lack of reliable data around pregnancy and early child rearing drove us up the wall! It's insane that it's still so frickin' artisanal, with half-baked webmd theories and online forums to go with!

Yep, that part sucks. New parents don’t need *suggestions* of things that might kill their baby, their brains are hyperactively imagining every threat scenarios already. (Be prepared, that particular feature of Dad Brain never entirely goes away)

The worst is when I google “is this sound dangerous in babies” and I have to read through a 5000 word preamble on the development of the respiratory system to find the one paragraph that says “it should be fine but contact your doctor if it keeps happening”

Grandparents are supposed to be helpful, we are doing this now as our children have children. Been that way for millenia and somebody decided recently that having distant 'experts' with nothing to lose by stoking fear is better (and more profitable). Many long phone calls.

I remember bill burr talked about being a new dad. He took her daughter outside, and all he could think about was whether he could fight off a hawk if it tried to snatch her.
