lots of physics laws are not laws so much as approximations using one simple trick because the actual thing is hard or impossible to solve the trick relies on an assumption. that assumption doesnt hold in reality. and yet the trick works wtf

i haven't dived into these calculations in much detail but there is a thing that is like... many complicated forces at work in a given situation, but you cleverly pick the right thing to approximate that captures "most of what happens", at least qualitatively
