Ok here is the main thing that I have to say about Class and why you should read it. Class is an introduction to a novel social refactoring, and teaches you how to start Noticing something that we may as well call class.

It is outdated and it is often inaccurate and the Class X is a little cringe (although probably prophetic about things to come after the book was published) And that's fine, that is not where the value is

Rather Class is worth reading because it hits on something /real/ about the multiple social-cultural groups that exist in a complex society like America, and even if you don't try to systematize it you can start to Notice it and use it to tell stories about your world

basically every new way of Noticing things is a gift and makes you a more complete and alive person and this is a novel and underutilized mode of paying attention to your social environment, regardless of whether he gets every detail right

some parts of this come off as BS to my eyes tbh the thing about simpsons and inequality or w/e, uh, no, if you live in a medium sized town all that stuff is pretty reasonably affordable
-
also I think the definition of upper class is way too restrictive

Excited to soon begin my own research on this, where I poll UMC friends about how they do things and try to find delineations
