a think I haven't seen much discussed is the effect of the collapse of wages in journalism discouraging anyone even remotely competent from becoming a journalist

The thing that gives me pause for every critique of this form (in which I include the Tyler Cowen "what are their GRE scores") is that the zero-sum model of talent it uses suggests fixing journalism (or public health, or whatever) means screwing some other industry.
-
This isn't to suggest the model is *wrong* as far as it goes. It just means that it's not as obvious we'll benefit on the whole from tightening up that field.

to be fair, New Journalism was also essentially made up. like, you wander around on the street and write some entertaining exaggerations of the shenanigans you got into. it's fun but it's "creative nonfiction" at best not legit reportage

It’s sort of fascinating how news stories aren’t even good writing any more, more worthy of being in a high school English class than in a publication for professional writing
-
My theory is that behind at least some of this is the death of understanding professionals as devoted to some sort of craft

journalism used to have the physical press and distribution infrastructure as a barrier to entry and the classified ads as a revenue stream, both of which were enormous, and it's not clear to me how much the actual journalism was necessary to the success of that model
-
like it's conceivable to me that the journalism was in part a vanity project on behalf of the owners of proto-craigslists

Thinking of every graduate of journalism schools graduating now that say “what have I done to my life?’
