like sure if you come from money you can do it, but the intersection of competent and old monied people is an incredibly rarefied group and hardly enough to staff an entire industry

so anyone who is not independently wealthy and possessed of good sense is going to do something like computer science or statistics and I think you see this reflected in the quality of journalism, which as literature has fallen dramatically. not for only this reason, but.

and it's a shame. journalism historically was often workaday yes. but you also had genuinely brilliant writers flexing their craft. New Journalism was real! it was not imaginary! and other journalists saw these stars writing and even if they did not reach that bar, they saw it

Time used to (maybe still does) do this, where they'd get two authors to write opposing opinions on a topic in the same section. They seemed to have a process of write draft > review opponent > make adjustments / closing statements that seemed fair and worthwhile to me
