we opened by talking about Manifestos, of which Olly is a producer; his first pass is here
props to @mechanical_monk for being a kind of meta-Unabomber, inciting people to abandon their orderly lives to write manifestos

I thought my performance here was sort of uneven but Olly is very charming and also just radiates thoughtfulness and kindness, and I think that is the salvation of this episode. We also spent some time talking Ireland and Europe and America and global hegemony, but . . .

ultimately ended up discussing children, and how to take them seriously, and how we can live in a society (good sense) again. This is what resonates with me most, always, and I might just make it an evergreen question for guests. How can we have a good life?

On the idea of kids and trying to get them to know it's ok to ask questions, I'd recommend listening to this episode of the clearer thinking podcast and where they talk about the Field Theory of Parenting. It starts around 39 minutes.https://clearerthinkingpodcast.com/?ep=021

The idea is to imagine a child running through an open field, blindfolded. You want them running around, unfettered, enjoying themselves, going wherever they want. But there are posts or obstacles that they might run into and hurt themselves.

@ollybot_redux what's the significance of the e at the end of your surname? You mentioned something about soup and famines and it sounds like a really interesting story

In order to get help from the soupers you had to give up your religion, and your Irish name and take an anglicised version. For me that'd be the difference between "Browne" and "Brown", for others it'd be things like "o'sullivan" vs. "sullivan"https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Souperism
