A few weeks ago I mocked somebody on here for saying that you don't have to believe anything that isn't true to be a good person. But of course he's right. You just have to pretend to believe them to be seen as a good person. Important distinction.

And of course it's always been this way. Everyone pretends to believe the socially acceptable falsehoods and discusses their true opinions and private with trusted friends. The folly of the rationalists was believing they could upend this arrangement, that truth could always win.
