IDK, it's weird. People don't have an awareness of rhetoric, and it's pervasive enough to imply something of a psyop in the education system. You never hear about great speeches anymore.
-
i genuinely suspect this honestly

I've been meaning to make a practice of this for a while. I started noticing and, I think, making small improvements while doing a lot of video calls because seeing a little mirror of myself made me more aware of it. Video presentations had the same effect even more intensified.

I feel like the best way to do this is to record yourself but just paying attention to it definitely is the most convenient and convenience is not to be underrated.

one of the few positive things i got out of way too much competitive debate. i think the next step after "pause to collect thoughts" and "don't use fill words" is to practice patterns of speaking, such that if you have a list of thoughts you can auto-organize them
-
careful not to over-do this because it'll make you seem very combative so i try and tone it down but i think just like you have a long list of writing transitions w/ different tone, purpose, etc making more explicit the speech version of this is very useful

feels to me like hundreds of years of pop culture has taught how accent/dialect allows infiltrating higher classes/professions - though perhaps in last few decades, it's been uncool to admit how powerful polished language skills still arehttps://twitter.com/gojomo/status/1343033221286510595 …

Agreed! One of the best ways to improve is to get feedback on your speech or you see yourself talking. What we're building at http://getpoise.com/ enables that on steroids.

You’ve answered your own question. Maxxing your social power level is generally discouraged (Yes, even in America)
