I think all 3 are true. I also have a low-confidence belief that therapy usually works about as well as the patient is expecting it to. I.E. someone truly convinced that depression is treatable & therapy will help, is more likely to actually find therapy helpful

my experience / observation is that free-form talk therapy can be pretty useless a lot of the time, and most people would benefit much more from the structure of something like CBT or DBT

id also add that most people are awful patients, and being a goos therapist involves increasing the marginal number of good patients. most therapists make therapy far too easy on their clients in pursuit of validation instead of progress

It turns out that having some rando tinker with your head and your most deep-seated fears and trigger might not be the best. Deadlift for the headlift!

One big issue is that therapy is so thoroughly feminized. Whereas women want to be understood and validated, men often sense a lack of agency that mere validation doesn't help with.

This is why one of the biggest suggestions for people who are depressed is to volunteer at an animal shelter.

IMHO getting proper training is necessary but not sufficient for a good therapist I think training helps the therapist learn how to act professional, set and respect boundaries, & keep patient confidentiality.

honestly the secret #4 part that I didnt mention was that professionalism is probably very bad for productive therapy and that shamans and madmen are likely more efficacious all else equal
