how does that work for you? you can't possibly be doing your most preferred activity 97% of the time, so what makes you not want to be doing something you enjoy more instead of doing boring tasks?

i like brushing my teeth oh
@selentelechia relevant one thing is that I am secretly incredibly particular about the way that I do almost everything that I actually do (and not at all about things that I dont)1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -

eg my sandwiches are made with incredible precision i have strong beliefs about which parts of a loaf are most appropriate for which kind of sandwich, ingredients are slice and placed or spread with laser precision i have specific orderings for dishes in the dishwasher

when I brush my teeth there is an optimal brush pattern for maximal cleanliness and I always (1) floss, (2) brush, (3) scrape i thought about this order at length

but it might be that there's a kind of Paying Attention that makes many things pleasant and satisfying sort of the way that the women in Stranger in a Strange Land talk about the way that Michael Valentine kisses them

that hes completely present in the moment and the action, essentially phrased both more casually and more poetically than that (I havent read it in twenty years but it stuck with me)

hmm i have heard people say that before but it doesn't seem to make sense! you'd think being present doing something boring would be worse, but it's certainly something i'm willing to try

Being present is its own reward, gives you the chance to find pleasure in everything if you're brave enough to take it
