every time I hear a story about a lawyer's awful behavior which was not punished by the profession's institutions of alleged self-regulation, I'm pushed toward a darker and darker straussian reading of legal ethics and such stories are ... common.

institutional ethics are fake except inasmuch as they serve as a means for an institution to protect itself ethics live only in the consciences of individuals
