i'm sure there's a way for a university to theoretically capture all the societal benefit generated by basic research but that sounds really dystopian

idk do they capture the full value of it? i guess the arg for it being bad is that wages being at this level means ppl are less likely to choose academia and the long-run effect of that is that we underproduce knowledge
