on the one hand, sure, maybe not in the same way. on the other hand, look at how much STEM research is done that leads nowhere and benefits no one. this is hard to know in advance

you could even say having professional historians (or whatever) is a kind of chesterton's fence insofar as society has collectively decided it's really bad not to have history experts
