But there's also necessarily this distrust in authority there. Why not "idk why it's impossible to hack relationships, but I trust my elders when they say that"?

I think there's some cluster of our elders in fact have a bad worldview and we can sort of intuitively sense it, and that everyone is messed up wrt authority so we're bad at accepting authority over ourselflves and they're bad at weilding it.

Experience is only true teacher, for sure. But culture can set people up for success vs. failure. Romantic relationships as consumer choice not a great default.
