DnD character creation and its consequences have been a disaster for the popular conceptualization of human talent

Most players I met couldn't play an Int=14+ character correctly if their lives depended on it. High Wis too. player limitations matter no matter the game system.

some people get to roll 3d6 and some roll 4d6 drop lowest, the DM just prefers it that way

AD&D 1e codified 4d6 drop lowest as the standard. 2e switched it to 3d6. I don’t know for sure about the old box sets.

The question is how much you trust your players and how much babysitting you want to do. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter - point-buy gives you the statistical equivalent of 3d6 anyway.

3d6 in order is the only way. “Oh, you didn’t roll 17+ for charisma? Guess you can’t be a paladin then.”
