this came across as kind of mean and I apologized a lot (I too had grown up listening to the two CD collection, third CD was the dregs imo) but the main problem was that I wasn't clear enough about the fact that I was trying to own myself for even being aware of this facet

buying a greatest hits album means you know two songs from the radio buying the best album means your a normie fan buying the second-worst album means you are devoted but sufficiently discerning not to buy the worst album

anyway this kind of signalling used to be rampant im not sure anyone does this with music anymore. maybe two people somewhere. little niche music scenes may still exist. but overall its not a broad cultural language anymore, music has nearly completely atomized.

today I was talking with Moon about this again and she mentioned specifically that she resents specifically pressure from Scenes to Have Opinions about bands or music before really acclimating to any of it or getting her bearings this transfers directly to twitter

afaict Politics is the new music scenes cool kids have their incomprehensible niche shit boomers just wanna replay the greatest hits from the sixties top 40 politic's is uniformly awful, commercialized, forced

think about the coolest person you knew from scene days who just really enjoyed music and didnt worry so much about signalling through music. they just really liked vibing maybe theyd gladly listen to any album you suggested, maybe theyd say naw no thanks but be chill about it

what I mean to say is that it is possible and good for each of us to be that person on twitter, instead of a slavering megafan without the good taste to avoid the worst album from the only band theyve ever listened to and around which they have built their entire identity
