yes and did children choose to be in those relationships, did parents feel free to abandon them at all

Kid's don't get a choice early. Options develop over the years. Parents COULD abandon, but the social consequences of action were made more immediate by their reliance on those same extended families. Other adults COULD intervene easier too, but with entangling consequences.

For some time now, I've been a believer in the notion that human brains got as big as they did BECAUSE of the complexity of these entanglements. We had to model more and more humans inside our own skulls as those bands grew in size and success.
