I imagine some - if not all - of of those folk practices meant something in the past: habits learned the hard way by ancestors, encoded in snappy sayings. 'always keep an edge on your knife' 'put the horse away dry' I don't know about the blade as a gift thing though.

I remember reading that handing someone a blade point first was considered a insult in some cultures. Could be related to that, in a "you'll need this soon" manner.
