Russia must be so chuffed that it is in the “great powers” league entirely due to very public neocon delusions when it’s really a resource extraction state desperately trying to retain *some* buffer on its indefensible borders.

russia's borders are quite defensible because there's nothing there anyone wants

entirely seriously for a sec: all major powers (and also europe) are converging on a model that I don’t particularly like but that will IMO prove medium term adaptive (“surveillance imperialism with capital markets”) – all the agitprop obscures how similar US, RU, CN are in this

IMO hugely counterproductive though. Your bio includes coder, but not sure whether you’re practicing ATM, so I don’t know how much of it you know from the producer side.

      a) GDPR, loud intention: protect consumer privacy. IME teams that were privacy conscious are no less so, teams that weren’t are no more, but all of them now have to check the “privacy box”. I.e.: the less privacy focused teams just write it into the explicit terms (little known…

… GDPR fact: we can always use legally or technically necessary data, explicit terms are meant only as backstop); then privacy-minded teams do same for CYA. Net effect: More paperwork, less budget for substantial privacy measures for those who wanted to take them anyway.

      b) GDPR, silent intention: Hobble US data squid companies, which hugely backfired. “Regulation helps the big” is apparently still a new lesson.

Austria wanted to solve this by exempting public sector entirely, until the EU courts disallowed. Coincidentally both the chief GDPR agitator and the most lenient national law implementation are from here. Schlendrian arbitrage as national industry is super on brand, so proud.
