i'm unsure how it could be established that an ai sophisticated enough to displace humans is not, even in human moral terms, right to do so.

If there is a risk, I don't think there's anything we can do about it. The show must go on.

I think ultimately it comes down to non-identical niches. So long as we cannot be directly replaced by superior nonbiological life, the incentive is towards a symbiotic relationship.
-
Like humans' "symbiotic" relationship with chickens?

I’m not worried, technology is a precarious house of cards. If the singularity threatens humanity, I’ll have my mother interact with it. She can disable anything.

the only undercurrent among the "solutions" I'm aware of is simply an insistence that "this is a problem that is Important and that should be on our radar", followed by the general research program on figuring out how to align AI---is it the alignment work you're objecting to?
-
are you objecting to the alignment work? I think even people working on alignment would agree it's nowhere even close to being "useful", but, y'know, if we knew what we were doing, it wouldn't be called research etc. etc.

imo each step taken is perfectly rational & well defended, argument stands up to logic as feasible potential scenario, hence we should weigh our response based on the downside risk vs probability vs cost of taking action etc problem is it assumes rest of the world stands still
-
at each time step between subsequent steps in the argument there are many ways in which the entire set of tradeoffs/probabilities can change strongly suspect its emphasized due to being something nerds are uniquely well positioned to be able to take action on sans politicals
