My impression is that they help enough that they're actually worth the $20 that they cost. Especially if you did a stand and put the mic 6 inches off your mouth.

1 advantage of pop-filter is it gives people a reference point for 'ideal distance' so you can put your face on it and always get v/ consistent result.
