From what I remember and for how it may be relevant, Chinese history tends to be much more a story of the past, whose main purpose was to entertain, as opposed to a genuine or factual account of the past in the way Western historians generally try to present and record things.

As a result of this, historians tend to find it difficult to derive truth from mythologized record for many parts and aspects of Chinese history. Could be way off here, anyone who knows better please correct me, but something along these lines at least.
