I've heard lots of anecdotes about the same thing in engineering majors. I definitely remember some of the chem-e folks being dumb founded by basic algebra in my chemical kinetics course

Pre-meds these days take special "pre-med science" courses that are probably 99% memorization. All med students and residents I have had the pleasure of speaking with are grinders who regard reading one book a year as a real conversation piece.
