They got their route, but never transported anything over it They made the bombers retreat, but weeks later the US got better airfields for striking Japan in the Pacific

They are a geopolitical island. Hard to invade and hold, but many still tried. Results in a sorta cyclical form of governance. Coastal regions have strong reasons to tie into foreign interests thru trade. Center must oppose or face extreme poverty.
